Started in 2010 by Dani Le Roy- artist and designer, and Laura Summs - artist and crochet artisan, Moonbasket makes luxurious crochet which lives comfortably in contemporary settings while maintaining the connection to the rich tradition of this versatile craft. Wherever possible we use natural, upcycled, and/or locally sourced fibres. Our pendant lights, crochet bowls set in durable resin, and motif carpets are elegant and inviting.
Woven through the objective of Moonbasket is the intention to help support the least priveledged of Cape Town, thus the crafters who handle the bulk of the making are women from Khayalitsha township, many of whom have been with us since our inception.
In 2015 Moonbasket is rediscovering surface pattern, specifically in the tapestry crochet handbags, which are influenced by Bauhaus tradition and African textile]e prints. We are also working with new stitches and glorious colours in our perennial lampshades and resined baskets.
